Jonathan Rosenbaum ist der Kritiker des Chicago
Reader, einer Zeitung, die ihm so gut wie alle Freiheiten der
Welt lässt, hat aber auch Texte in der Village Voice, in Sight
and Sound und im Film Comment
veröffentlicht.
Er wuchs in der beneidenswerten Situation auf, der Enkel eines
Kinokettenbetreibers in Alabama zu sein. Sein Vater arbeitete für diese
Kette und Rosenbaum verbrachte einen nicht geringen Teil seiner Kindheit
in den fünfziger Jahren - im Kino, und zwar, ohne Eintritt zahlen zu
müssen. Von 1969 bis 1977 lebte Rosenbaum in London und Paris. In Paris
hat er exzessiv die Cinématheque Francaise besucht, in London
war er beim British Film Institute beschäftigt - daher seine
umfassende Kenntnis des nicht-amerikanischen Films.
Rosenbaum ist ein Kritiker,
der streng denkt und entspannt schreibt. Ein unermüdlicher Verteidiger
seiner hohen Maßstäbe, dabei ist es ihm aber ganz egal, ob er
- was eben eher selten passiert - im Mainstream ein Meisterwerk entdeckt
oder im tiefsten aufmerksamkeitsökonomischen Weltkino-Abseits (das im
übrigen durchaus in den USA liegen kann). Kaum einer außer ihm
vermag zugleich so oft vermeintlich subjektiv "Ich" zu sagen und kein Jota
von seinem klug und durch enzyklopädische Filmkenntnis begründeten
Urteil abzulassen.
Rosenbaum ist ein vehementer Kritiker der ökonomischen Verfassung
des amerikanischen Filmsystems - er verweigert spezielle Werbeeinladungen
zu Vorführungen für Starkritiker und erweist sich in seinem Buch
Movie Wars: How Hollywood and the Media Conspire to Limit What Films We
Can See als Kenner und Gegner des amerikanischen Kino-Markts und insbesondere
der Hollywood-Fixierung der amerikanischen Kritik (wie natürlich auch
